As mentioned, all Chinese characters were originally the same, so while some characters were changed in the simplified Chinese system, some remained unchanged. The most obvious difference between the two sets of characters is that Traditional characters are typically more complicated and have more strokes, while simplified characters are, as the name suggests, simpler and have fewer strokes. Traditional Chinese is also more frequently seen in overseas Chinese communities, as they largely developed prior to the promulgation of Simplified Chinese, which is the official standard in China today. The education systems of Taiwan and Hong Kong list between 40 common use characters. Traditional Chinese characters maintain their forms in which they existed before the introduction of Simplified Chinese in the People’s Republic of China in the 1950s. The modern shapes of traditional Chinese characters first appeared with the emergence of the clerical script during the Han dynasty and have been more or less stable since the 5th century.Ĭurrently, Traditional characters are used most commonly in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
